Singer Lionel Richie was hospitalised after experiencing difficulties during a concert in St. Louis, Missouri, on August 29. The veteran performer was reportedly taken to intensive care for monitoring after appearing to struggle during his show.
According to reports, Richie showed possible signs of mild dehydration while performing. Concertgoers noticed that the 77-year-old singer needed a stool during the final part of his performance. He eventually completed the show with his popular hit “All Night Long”.
Richie had hoped to leave the hospital on September 1, but remained under medical care. Doctors were also carrying out tests related to his heart, with reports suggesting that he could be discharged on September 2.
This is not the first health-related interruption Richie has faced during his tour this year. In June, he was taken to hospital after falling unwell during a performance in St. Paul, Minnesota. At the time, he told the audience that he was feeling dizzy and strange before being taken away by ambulance. Several shows were subsequently delayed.
Amid concern over his health, attention has also turned to Richie’s family and personal life.
Richie has three children from his two marriages. He married Brenda Harvey in 1975, and the couple later adopted their daughter Nicole Richie. Their marriage ended in divorce in 1993.
Two years later, Richie married Diane Alexander. The couple had two children, Miles Brockman Richie, born in 1994, and Sofia Richie, born in 1998. Richie and Alexander divorced in 2004.
The singer has previously spoken openly about fatherhood, describing his children as an important part of his life. He has also credited them with helping him cope with a difficult period after the death of his father in 1990.
Richie remains one of the most successful figures in American popular music. He has won four Grammy Awards and received an Academy Award and a Golden Globe, among several other major honours. He was also inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
His career received another boost in 2018 when he joined ABC’s “American Idol” as a judge. He has remained part of the judging panel throughout the show’s revival.
Celebrity Net Worth estimates Richie’s fortune at around $200 million, built through his decades-long music career, performances and television work.
For now, fans are awaiting further updates on the singer’s condition as he remains under medical observation in St. Louis.
