News Desk: Ladakh has added Sankoo as its eighth district, in a move aimed at bringing administration closer to people and improving access to government services. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the decision during a public gathering in Sankoo on Friday.
The new district has been carved out of Kargil district and will comprise the tehsils of GM Pore, TSG and Taisuru. The announcement comes less than six months after the administration announced the creation of five new districts: Changthang, Drass, Nubra, Sham and Zanskar.
Addressing the gathering, Saxena said the creation of Sankoo district fulfilled a long-standing aspiration of local residents. He added that the administration’s objective was to make government services more accessible and ensure that the benefits of development reach every village and household.
The lieutenant governor also expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah for their continued support for Ladakh’s development.
Alongside the new district, the administration has announced five additional tehsils across the region. These are Aryan Valley in Sham, Sodh in Kargil, Phey in Zanskar, Thasgam in Drass and Hemya in Changthang.
The latest announcements follow the creation of 17 new tehsils on July 12. With the addition of the five new administrative units, Ladakh’s total number of tehsils has increased to 37.
The expansion is part of the administration’s efforts to decentralise governance and improve the delivery of public services across the Union Territory, where difficult terrain and long distances can make access to government offices challenging for residents.
Saxena said the administrative requirements for the newly created Sankoo district would be addressed at the earliest.
The creation of new districts and tehsils is expected to help streamline local administration and make it easier for residents to access essential government services closer to their homes.
