A security guard has been arrested in Hyderabad after a 26-year-old software engineer alleged that he molested her shortly after she got out of a cab, police said on Wednesday.
The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday and came to light after the woman approached the police and filed a complaint. The accused works as a security guard at a nearby hostel.
According to the complaint, the woman was getting out of a cab when the guard, who was standing near the vehicle, allegedly grabbed her and kissed her without consent. Police subsequently registered a case under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) concerning assault or use of criminal force against a woman with intent to outrage her modesty and sexual harassment.
The accused has denied the allegation. During questioning, he reportedly told police that he had held the woman because she had fallen down. Police said further investigation is underway to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident.
In a separate case in Bihar's Darbhanga district, police apprehended two people, including a minor, after a girl was allegedly harassed in public while she was on her way to school.
The incident took place on Monday in Keeratpur village. According to police, two people travelling on a motorcycle allegedly attempted to snatch the girl's dupatta. She raised an alarm, attracting the attention of people nearby, but the accused reportedly fled from the spot.
Police registered a case at Jamalpur police station under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant provisions of the BNS. Both accused were subsequently traced within around five hours. The 19-year-old accused was sent to jail after being produced before a court, while the minor was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board.
The Darbhanga case comes amid investigations into a separate incident reported in Bihar's Jamui on September 19, where a teenage girl and a boy were allegedly harassed on a road. Police said two principal accused were arrested following an encounter on Tuesday, during which both were injured. The total number of arrests in that case has reached five, including three minors.
Investigations into the Hyderabad incident and the other cases are continuing.
