Five Bangladeshi Nationals Sentenced to 2 Years in Tripura

A court in Tripura’s Unakoti district has sentenced five Bangladeshi nationals, including a couple, to two years of rigorous imprisonment for illegally entering India in two separate cases.

According to police, three Bangladeshi men — Imran Hossain, Arman Hossain and Manir Hossain — were detained along with two Indian alleged touts at Paiturbazar motorstand in Kailasahar. The three men were residents of Bangladesh’s Comilla district.

During questioning, police found that the three had allegedly entered India through the Rangauti border under the Irani police station area in Kailasahar on February 1 this year. Officers said they did not possess valid documents authorising their entry into the country.

Following the trial, the court convicted the three men under relevant provisions of the Immigration and Foreigners’ Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Each was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹10,000.

The court also ordered that those unable to pay the fine would have to serve an additional two months in prison.

In a separate case, police detained a Bangladeshi couple, identified as Shiuli Begam and Sahid Sekh, along with their minor child from a newly constructed building in Kailasahar on June 10 last year.

The couple, who are residents of Bangladesh’s Rangpur district, allegedly admitted during interrogation that they had entered India illegally and were attempting to return to Bangladesh.

After the trial, the court found both of them guilty under provisions of the Indian Passport-related law and the Foreigners Act. They were each sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹10,000.

As in the first case, failure to pay the fine will result in an additional two months of imprisonment.

The two cases highlight the legal action being taken against foreign nationals found entering India without the required travel or immigration documents. The convictions followed investigations by Tripura Police and subsequent court proceedings in Unakoti district.

Police said the cases involved separate incidents and were dealt with independently by the court. The sentences were pronounced on Wednesday, with the five accused receiving the same two-year prison term, along with financial penalties.
