A 32-year-old man was seriously injured after a speeding car allegedly hit him while he was crossing a road to collect his birthday cake in Greater Noida earlier this month. The driver allegedly fled the spot after the collision.
The incident took place at around 4:10 am on September 5 near Ek Murti Junction. The injured man, identified as Himanshu Rai, is a resident of Extension Villa in Sector 10, Greater Noida.
Rai was crossing the road while carrying his birthday cake when the car hit him. He suffered multiple injuries, including fractures, and was rushed to a nearby private hospital. Police said he is out of danger but remains hospitalised.
Speaking to news agency ANI from his hospital bed, Rai recalled the incident and said the car appeared to be travelling at a very high speed. He estimated that it may have been travelling at more than 100 km/h and alleged that the driver did not stop after hitting him.
Rai also said that, based on the manner in which the vehicle was being driven, he suspected the driver could have been under the influence of alcohol. This was his account of the incident, and the allegation regarding alcohol consumption remains subject to investigation.
According to the FIR, Rai and his wife, Jyoti Mandal, had gone to Ek Murti Junction to collect a birthday cake. The couple had ordered the cake, but the delivery service was available only up to the junction.
Mandal said she remained inside their vehicle while Rai crossed the road to collect the order. As he was returning with the cake, an unidentified car allegedly struck him and immediately left the area without stopping to help.
After the collision, Mandal called the police emergency helpline 112 and took her husband to a private hospital, according to the police.
A CCTV video purportedly showing the collision later circulated widely on social media. The footage appeared to show the vehicle hitting Rai at speed and throwing him some distance away. However, the report noted that the authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.
Police subsequently began tracing the vehicle and its driver. Investigators said the suspect was travelling towards Sector 52 in Noida when the collision occurred.
With the help of electronic surveillance, police traced the alleged driver and arrested him on Wednesday. The accused is a 24-year-old management student, originally from Kanpur, who lives in Badalpur.
Police identified the vehicle involved as a Tata Punch.
A case has been registered at Bisrakh police station under Section 125(b) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, relating to an act endangering life or personal safety, and Section 281, relating to rash driving.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the exact circumstances of the collision, including the speed of the vehicle and the events immediately before and after the accident.
The incident has drawn attention to the dangers posed by high-speed driving, particularly on roads with pedestrians during early-morning hours. The investigation will determine the legal responsibility of the accused based on the evidence collected by police.
