A 46-year-old Indian Army sepoy died on Thursday after sustaining a gunshot injury to his neck at a security post inside the National Defence Academy (NDA) in Pune’s Khadakwasla area.
The incident took place on September 11 at around 10.18 am at Post No. 8 inside the academy. The sepoy, who was posted with the 282 Defence Security Corps (DSC) platoon, was immediately taken to the Military Hospital after suffering the injury.
According to police, the bullet entered through the front of his neck and exited through the back. He suffered significant blood loss and remained in critical condition while undergoing treatment. Police said his medical records showed shallow breathing and a reduced level of consciousness following the incident.
The sepoy died several days later while receiving treatment at the Military Hospital. His postmortem examination was conducted and his body was subsequently handed over to his family members.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting and have not yet determined how the weapon was fired. Investigators are examining whether the incident was an accidental discharge or a case of self-inflicted injury.
Senior Police Inspector Raghvendra Kshirsagar of the Uttamnagar police station said NDA authorities informed the police about the incident. Officers conducted a spot panchanama and recovered the bullet shell from the location.
“The weapon and other circumstances are being examined,” police said, adding that it was too early to reach a conclusion about whether the shooting was accidental or self-inflicted.
Southern Command public relations officer Ankush Chavan confirmed the sepoy’s death on Thursday evening and said the NDA would issue an official statement.
The investigation is continuing, with police examining the weapon involved and other available evidence to establish the sequence of events that led to the gunshot injury.
Authorities are yet to disclose further details about the circumstances at the security post or the findings of the ongoing investigation.
