A college event in Ahmedabad reportedly took an unexpected turn after a professor confronted a student who heckled him from the audience during a programme at Nirma University.
The incident took place during Technofora 2026, a three-day event organised by students of the university’s Institute of Technology between September 18 and 20. A video purportedly showing the incident has since circulated widely on social media. However, the authenticity of the video could not be independently verified.
According to reports, the incident occurred while a professor was addressing the audience from the stage. During his remarks, a student could allegedly be heard shouting, “Jaldi kar, Panvel nikalna hai,” a popular dialogue from the Bollywood film Golmaal 3. The comment appeared to interrupt the proceedings.
The professor then called the student onto the stage. In the video circulating online, he can be seen approaching the student and grabbing him by the collar before reprimanding him for the interruption.
The professor is heard warning the student that insulting a faculty member would have serious consequences. He also reportedly said that he could “go to any extent” and warned the student against disrespecting faculty members at the university.
The incident happened during an event that also featured comedian Rajat Sood, who is known for his style of combining poetry, or shayari, with comedy. Sood has a substantial following on social media and was among the attractions at the university programme.
The video appears to show Sood leaving the stage and waving goodbye to the audience around the time the confrontation between the professor and the student took place. The footage subsequently gained attention online, prompting discussions about the conduct of faculty members and students during college events.
The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), a Congress-affiliated student organisation, has reportedly raised concerns over the incident. Bhavik Solanki, national coordinator of NSUI, alleged that the student was subjected to inappropriate behaviour and called for an apology from the professor.
NSUI has also sought an inquiry into the incident. Solanki said the organisation could organise a protest if its demands were not addressed.
The incident has generated debate over how disagreements between teachers and students should be handled, particularly during public college events. While students are expected to maintain discipline and respect during academic programmes, questions have also been raised about the manner in which faculty members should respond to heckling or disruptive behaviour.
At present, the available video provides only a limited view of the incident, and the full circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain unclear. The university or the professor involved has not been reported as having publicly provided a detailed account of what happened before or after the exchange.
