News Desk: Tushar Gandhi, the 66-year-old great-grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, was detained by police in Mumbai on Saturday, October 10, amid a wider crackdown on protests against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar. His daughter, Kasturi Gandhi, raised concerns over the detention and said her father needed his medicines.

According to Kasturi Gandhi, her father was followed and detained before being taken to the DN Nagar Police Station in Andheri West. She shared details of the incident on social media platform X, along with a message she said she had received from him following the police action.

The message reportedly read, “Bring my medicine,” prompting concerns about his access to necessary medication while in police custody.

“Listen to the testimony of the driver who saw the state apparatus pick up a 66 year old unarmed descendant of India’s founders,” Kasturi Gandhi wrote in her post.

She also shared a conversation with the driver who was present during the incident. In the recording, the driver described how police personnel allegedly approached their vehicle near Link Road and took Tushar Gandhi away.

“The police suddenly came when we were going in the car… They took him,” the driver said, adding that several police personnel were present in the area.

According to the driver, the officers called Tushar Gandhi out of the vehicle and took him away without providing an explanation at the time. The circumstances surrounding the detention were not immediately clear from the available information.

Opposition Leaders Detained Across Delhi

The incident in Mumbai came amid a series of detentions linked to protests against CEC Gyanesh Kumar in Delhi. Members of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), along with several opposition leaders and activists, were detained as authorities tightened security ahead of the planned demonstration at Jantar Mantar.

CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and co-conveners Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were detained inside an aircraft after arriving at Delhi airport on Saturday morning.

Several CPI(M) leaders, including Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, party general secretary M.A. Baby and other senior leaders, were also reportedly detained upon reaching Jantar Mantar.

Former West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee was detained in the afternoon while staging a sit-in near South Avenue bus stand.

Protests Amid Tight Security

The detentions took place amid heightened security arrangements across the national capital. Protesters have demanded accountability from the Election Commission and raised concerns about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The developments have triggered a wider political debate over the handling of demonstrations and the rights of citizens to express dissent peacefully.

Tushar Gandhi’s detention added another dimension to the controversy, with his daughter’s public appeal drawing attention to concerns about his well-being and access to medication.
