New Delhi, October 10, 2026: Delhi remained on high alert on Saturday ahead of the proposed protest by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). Amid heightened security arrangements, Delhi Police posted a video showing deserted roads at Jantar Mantar, drawing attention on the day of the planned demonstration against the Election Commission.
The CJP had planned a major protest at Jantar Mantar on October 10, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. However, Delhi Police denied permission for the proposed demonstration.
According to the police, permission was not granted due to the late submission of the application, alleged violations of rules during previous demonstrations, and the prevailing law-and-order situation.
Security arrangements across the national capital were tightened ahead of the protest. Barricades were placed along key roads, vehicles were subjected to checks, and additional police personnel were deployed at sensitive locations. Authorities also took measures to prevent protesters from reaching Jantar Mantar.
CJP Leaders Detained
Amid the security restrictions, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and party leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka were reportedly detained at Delhi airport, according to the party. The CJP questioned the police action and alleged that the detention was intended to prevent its leaders from participating in the planned demonstration.
Several lawyers who attempted to march from the Supreme Court towards Jantar Mantar were also reportedly detained before reaching the protest site.
The police video showing empty roads at Jantar Mantar emerged as security restrictions remained in force across several parts of Delhi. However, it was not immediately clear when the footage was recorded or whether it reflected the overall situation in the capital throughout the day.
SIR Controversy Behind Protest
The proposed demonstration was organised amid opposition criticism of the Election Commission over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Opposition leaders and activists have raised concerns about the voter-list revision process and its potential impact on voters.
The Election Commission, however, has defended the electoral roll revision process against criticism.
The video posted by Delhi Police has now become a talking point amid the political tensions surrounding the proposed protest. Attention remains focused on the police deployment, the detention of CJP leaders and the developments surrounding the demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
