At just 15 years of age, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already attracted considerable attention in Indian cricket. His impressive performances have raised expectations, but legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar believes the youngster should not be rushed into major leadership responsibilities so early in his career. Instead, Tendulkar has advised him to gain more experience in red-ball cricket and develop gradually.
The discussion comes after Suryavanshi was appointed vice-captain of the East Zone team for the Duleep Trophy. The decision to give such an important responsibility to a 15-year-old cricketer has generated debate, with Tendulkar sharing his views during a question-and-answer session on Reddit on Tuesday.
Responding to a question about Suryavanshi's leadership appointment, the former India captain suggested that the decision might have come too early. He emphasised the importance of allowing the young batter to play more matches in the longer format before taking on additional responsibilities.
"I think making him the vice-captain of the Duleep Trophy team is a little premature at this stage. He should be allowed to play more red-ball cricket. One step at a time," Tendulkar said.
His comments do not question Suryavanshi's talent or potential. Rather, they highlight the importance of managing expectations and ensuring that young players are given enough time to develop their skills without facing unnecessary pressure.
Suryavanshi's cricketing journey has progressed rapidly. After attracting attention with his performances in domestic cricket and the Indian Premier League, he has also earned opportunities at the international level. His achievements at such a young age have made him one of the most closely watched emerging talents in Indian cricket.
However, Tendulkar believes that success in limited-overs cricket should not be the only measure of a young player's development. Regular exposure to red-ball cricket is essential for improving concentration, patience, technique and the ability to build long innings.
Suryavanshi's leadership experience in the Duleep Trophy also increased when East Zone captain Ishan Kishan was forced to leave the field due to injury. The teenager subsequently took charge during the semi-final against Central Zone.
He made a significant contribution with the bat, scoring 92 runs off just 81 deliveries. His performance also made him the youngest player to score a half-century in Duleep Trophy history. He came close to challenging Sachin Tendulkar's record as the youngest centurion in first-class cricket as well.
Despite these impressive achievements, Tendulkar believes that a gradual approach will be more beneficial for the youngster's long-term career.
With expectations continuing to rise around Suryavanshi, the former India legend's advice carries an important message: talent needs time, experience and the right opportunities to develop into sustained success.
