New Delhi, October 12: Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Monday announced that the INDIA bloc would approach the Supreme Court at 3 pm against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over allegations of “vote chori” and irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Addressing a press conference at the Congress headquarters, Indira Bhawan, Rahul said the Opposition would file a petition in the apex court and called upon people across the country to support the campaign. He maintained that the fight was not about any individual political leader but about protecting the Constitution and the future of the country.
Rahul also invited people from all political backgrounds, including supporters of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), to join the movement if they believed that the Constitution was under threat.
“This is the fight for your future,” Rahul said, urging people who could not participate in person to express their solidarity when the petition was filed at 3 pm.
Rahul's claim about government officers
During the press conference, Rahul made a significant claim about officials within the Narendra Modi-led government. He alleged that around 200 government officers were in contact with the Opposition and passing on information.
“I want to tell PM Modi, 200 officers from within your government are in touch with us; they are passing on information to us,” Rahul claimed.
He also asserted that approximately 50 per cent of police personnel believed the Opposition's actions were justified. Rahul named the police, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) while describing what he characterised as a growing divide between the security forces and the political leadership. These assertions were made by Rahul during the press conference and were not independently established in the report.
INDIA bloc's march amid heightened security
The INDIA bloc had planned a march from Connaught Place towards the Supreme Court to protest against CEC Gyanesh Kumar over the alleged irregularities in the SIR process. According to Rahul, the march was scheduled to begin from Barakhamba Junction at 1:30 pm.
The announcement came amid heightened security in the national capital following demonstrations associated with Abhijeet Dipke-led Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). Police personnel were deployed at key intersections, while barricades were placed on roads leading to Jantar Mantar to prevent protesters from gathering.
The Delhi Traffic Police had also issued an advisory warning of possible disruptions in New Delhi and central Delhi, with restrictions and diversions to be implemented according to the situation on the ground.
The political confrontation follows the INDIA bloc's unsuccessful attempt to secure a meeting with Chief Justice of India Surya Kant over concerns relating to the CEC and the SIR exercise.
With the Opposition now planning to take its allegations before the Supreme Court, attention is focused on the legal steps it intends to pursue and the response from the Election Commission. The allegations of electoral irregularities remain contested, and any judicial determination will depend on the material and arguments placed before the court.
