Bangladesh Sees Record Dengue Surge: 2,249 Cases, 7 Deaths in 24 Hours

Bangladesh has reported 2,249 new dengue cases and seven deaths in the 24 hours leading up to Sunday morning, October 25, marking the highest single-day number of infections recorded in the country so far in 2026.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), the latest figures have pushed the total number of dengue cases reported in Bangladesh this year to 123,948. The death toll has risen to 384.

Of the seven latest fatalities, two were reported in the Dhaka North City Corporation area and two in the Mymensingh division. Dhaka South City Corporation, Khulna and Rajshahi divisions each recorded one death.

Official figures also show that women accounted for 52.8 per cent of all dengue-related deaths, while men made up 47.2 per cent. Meanwhile, 117,400 dengue patients have recovered and been discharged from hospitals across the country.

The sharp rise in infections has raised fresh concerns about the spread of dengue as healthcare facilities face increasing pressure. Last month, Bangladesh's State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock, Sultan Salauddin Tuku, warned that the situation in Dhaka and other districts could worsen in the coming months. He urged people to remain alert and take preventive measures.

Health experts have attributed the rising number of deaths to several factors, including delayed hospitalisation, inappropriate treatment and the vulnerability of high-risk patients. Many people reportedly seek testing and medical care only after their condition becomes critical, reducing the chances of timely intervention.

H.M. Nazmul Ahsan, an associate professor at Dhaka's Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital, said the recent increase in dengue deaths was largely associated with the rapid spread of infections nationwide. He identified three broad factors contributing to fatalities: characteristics of the virus, patient-related vulnerabilities and treatment-related complications.

Public health expert Mushtuq Husain has called for a stronger three-tier healthcare system covering primary, secondary and tertiary care to improve dengue management and ensure patients receive timely treatment.

With cases continuing to rise, health experts stress the importance of mosquito-control measures and early medical intervention. People are advised to remove stagnant water around their homes, use mosquito nets and repellents, and seek medical attention promptly if they develop symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, body aches, vomiting or unusual bleeding.
