A 40-year-old Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) head constable was injured after unidentified individuals hurled a hand grenade at a Rapid Action Force (RAF) outpost in Manipur’s Imphal East district on Thursday night, police said on Friday.
The attack took place at around 9 pm at the gate of the B/107 RAF outpost in New Lambulane. The injured personnel, identified as Dhananjoy Rai, a resident of Uttar Pradesh, sustained splinter injuries to his abdomen in the explosion.
Following the blast, Rai was initially taken to the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS) hospital in Imphal East. He was later referred to Shija Hospital, a private medical facility in Imphal West, for further treatment.
According to hospital authorities, doctors successfully removed the splinters from his body. However, Rai remains under observation in the intensive care unit (ICU) and is receiving ventilator support.
Police officials said the identity of the attackers and the motive behind the grenade attack remain unknown. No group has claimed responsibility for the incident so far.
Security forces cordoned off the affected area following the explosion. A mass search operation was launched in the New Lambulane area early Friday morning to identify and apprehend those responsible. However, officials confirmed that no suspects had been arrested during the operation.
The latest attack comes amid continuing security concerns in Manipur, where armed groups have previously targeted security personnel.
On September 10, CRPF personnel came under fire while patrolling near Khonghampat along National Highway 2, which connects Imphal and Dimapur, in Imphal West district. No injuries were reported in that incident.
Subsequent investigations revealed the involvement of the banned underground outfit National Revolutionary Front of Manipur (NRFM). Two cadres of the outfit, who were father and son, were arrested in connection with the case. An AK-47 rifle and ammunition were also recovered from their possession.
Authorities are continuing their investigation into Thursday night's grenade attack as security personnel search for the unidentified assailants. Further details about the incident and the condition of the injured head constable are awaited.
