News Desk: Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro has refused to concede defeat in the presidential runoff election, announcing plans to challenge the results and seek the annulment of the vote. His move comes after incumbent President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva secured a closely contested victory, winning a fourth presidential term.

According to figures cited by Brazilian media, Lula received 51.76 per cent of the valid votes, compared with 48.24 per cent for Flavio Bolsonaro, with 99.77 per cent of ballots counted. The result marks another significant moment in Brazil’s deeply divided political landscape.

Speaking after the election on Sunday, Flavio said his legal team would challenge the outcome, alleging irregularities in the electoral process. However, he did not provide supporting evidence for his claims.

“We will use our legal team; we will request the annulment of these elections,” Flavio said, according to Brazilian media reports.

One of his main objections concerns a decision by Supreme Federal Court Justice Cristiano Zanin to extend voting hours by two hours, until 7 pm. Flavio questioned the decision and argued that changes to electoral procedures during voting were unacceptable.

Reports said the extension followed concerns that reduced public transport services in some municipalities could prevent voters from reaching polling stations. Both presidential campaigns had reportedly sought extensions amid election-day difficulties.

Flavio also alleged that inspectors from his party, the Liberal Party (PL), had been removed from a secure room during the electoral process. He did not provide evidence to substantiate that allegation either.

“There’s a lot to be clarified before Brazil simply acknowledges this dirty trick that happened in these elections,” he said, indicating that he intended to continue challenging the result through legal channels.

Meanwhile, Lula declared victory after the runoff and emphasised the importance of democratic participation. In a statement shared on social media platform X, the president said the election demonstrated the role of voting in protecting democracy. He also reiterated his position on national sovereignty, declaring that “Brazil is no one’s backyard”.

Lula’s campaign focused on economic conditions, public security and democratic institutions. Flavio, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, campaigned on a tougher approach to crime and measures to reduce food costs.

The election outcome has also attracted attention across Latin America, with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum among the regional leaders congratulating Lula.

Flavio’s decision to seek legal action raises the prospect of a post-election dispute as Brazil prepares for another Lula presidency. The outcome of any legal challenge will depend on the arguments presented and the decisions of the relevant electoral authorities and courts.
