Mumbai, November 6: An elderly woman was targeted by an unidentified man in a shocking chain-snatching incident at a residential apartment complex in Mumbai's Kandivali West. The accused allegedly approached the woman under the pretext of asking for an address before suddenly attacking her and snatching the gold chain from her neck. The entire incident was captured on a CCTV camera.
The incident took place at Umang Apartment in Kandivali West at around 9:23 pm on November 3. According to the available information, the elderly woman was standing outside her flat and attempting to open the door when the accused approached her.
The CCTV footage shows a man wearing a shirt, trousers and a cap walking towards the woman. He reportedly pretended to be looking for someone's address within the housing complex. To make his story appear convincing, he also showed the woman a piece of paper. The woman then pointed towards the staircase, apparently trying to guide him to the location he was looking for.
However, the man had allegedly approached her with a different intention. Moments after their brief conversation, he suddenly turned aggressive and attacked the elderly woman. He forcibly pulled the gold chain from her neck and immediately fled from the spot.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of senior citizens living in residential complexes, particularly those who may be alone at night. The fact that the accused managed to approach the woman by pretending to seek directions has also highlighted how criminals can use seemingly harmless excuses to target unsuspecting residents.
Following the incident, the elderly woman lodged a complaint with the police. A case has been registered, and investigators are examining the CCTV footage to identify the accused and establish his movements before and after the crime.
Police are making efforts to trace the suspect. The footage is expected to play an important role in the investigation, as it captures the accused approaching the victim and fleeing after allegedly stealing her jewellery.
The incident has once again highlighted the need for increased security measures in residential buildings, including proper CCTV surveillance, visitor verification and greater vigilance by security personnel.
Residents have also been urged to remain cautious while interacting with unknown individuals, especially during late hours. For elderly people living alone, additional safety arrangements and assistance from neighbours could prove particularly important.
