News Desk: A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his wife and father with a sharp weapon in West Bengal’s Bankura district, police said. The shocking incident took place on Monday night at Nat Lalbaba Manachar, near the Damodar River, triggering panic among local residents.
The accused, identified as Mangal Choudhury, allegedly beheaded his wife, Rumpa Choudhury, 39, before killing his father, Rajendra Choudhury, who was around 60 years old.
According to police, the woman’s severed head was allegedly placed at a temple, while her father-in-law’s body was recovered from the courtyard of their house. The incident has left residents of the area shocked.
The location falls near the boundary between the jurisdictions of Sonamukhi police station in Bankura district and Kanksa police station in Paschim Bardhaman district. Police personnel from both stations reached the spot after receiving information about the incident.
Investigators recovered both bodies and began arrangements for post-mortem examinations. Police are also investigating the circumstances surrounding the killings and trying to establish the motive behind the alleged double murder.
The accused reportedly attempted to attack his brother as well, but the latter managed to escape.
Questions have also been raised about a possible connection between the incident and occult practices. Local residents claimed that Mangal and his wife regularly offered prayers at a temple and that a tantric practitioner used to visit their house.
However, police have not confirmed any link between the killings and tantric rituals. Investigators are examining all possible angles, including whether another person may have influenced or instigated the accused.
Mangal was arrested on Monday, but he could not be produced before a court because he had an injured finger. He was admitted to Bankura Sammilani Medical College and Hospital for treatment, police said.
The investigation is continuing, and authorities are yet to establish the exact motive behind the crime. Police are expected to gather further evidence and examine relevant statements as part of the ongoing probe.
The incident has raised serious concerns among residents, while investigators continue to piece together the sequence of events that led to the deaths of two family members.
