Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) chief C Joseph Vijay on Monday strongly criticised the use of abusive and defamatory language against women, saying he would not tolerate such remarks.
Speaking in the state Assembly, Vijay said women played a major role in his political victory and deserved respect. He stressed that while political criticism could be sharp, personal attacks and offensive comments against women were unacceptable.
“Women are the main reason behind my political victory. I will not tolerate any abusive language against women,” Vijay said.
Without naming anyone, he also expressed concern over the growing use of what he described as “double-meaning” language against women in Tamil Nadu. He urged political leaders and others to avoid personal attacks and maintain dignity in public discourse.
Vijay’s comments came days after a controversy involving actor Trisha and senior DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin. Udhayanidhi had faced criticism over remarks concerning Trisha, who is widely reported to be a close friend of Vijay. Although Vijay did not directly refer to the incident or name Udhayanidhi, his remarks were seen in the context of the recent controversy.
The TVK chief, who made his political debut and came to power this year, has increasingly positioned himself as a new political force in Tamil Nadu. His remarks in the Assembly underline his emphasis on women voters and respectful political discourse.
Vijay also said that the public was closely watching how political figures behaved and what kind of language they used against women.
His statement is likely to add to the political debate in Tamil Nadu, where personal remarks and attacks between rival parties have frequently triggered controversies. By drawing a clear line between political criticism and defamatory comments, Vijay sought to emphasise that political differences should not become an excuse for insulting women.
The comments also come at a time when Vijay’s TVK is establishing itself in the state’s political landscape after its electoral breakthrough. His strong stand on the issue is expected to attract attention among supporters and political observers as the party seeks to consolidate its position in Tamil Nadu.
