Mumbai: Rohit Sharma has once again left his fans and the cricket world guessing about his future in ODI cricket after a brief comment about the 2027 World Cup triggered fresh speculation.
At an event in Mumbai on Thursday, the former India captain was asked whether he would play in the next 50-over World Cup, scheduled to be held in southern Africa. Rohit simply replied, “October 2027 is far away, we will see about it then.”
While the comment was seemingly straightforward, it immediately reignited questions about whether the 39-year-old opener will continue playing international cricket until the World Cup. With more than a year still remaining, Rohit has made it clear that he is not ready to make any commitment about his availability.
Rohit’s future has been under constant discussion since he was removed as India’s ODI captain after leading the team to the Champions Trophy title in Dubai. His position became an even bigger talking point after speculation that the ODI against England at Lord’s in July could be his final international appearance.
However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later publicly indicated that Rohit was not finished with international cricket. Rohit subsequently strengthened his case with a century at Lord’s, allowing his performances to speak for him.
The veteran batter has also maintained a strong focus on fitness. Despite his age, his recent performances and physical condition have continued to keep him in contention for a place in the ODI side.
Adding another layer to the speculation, Rohit is set to make his television debut as the host of a family entertainment and reality show, Family Full House with Rohit Sharma. A teaser for the programme even showed him wearing a T-shirt carrying the words “non committal”, which fans quickly connected with his latest comments about the World Cup.
However, there is little indication that his television venture means he is preparing to retire. Rohit has reportedly continued training, working on his batting, fielding, strength and fitness.
India’s upcoming ODI assignments will provide further opportunities for him to make his case. The team is scheduled to face the West Indies at home later this month, followed by a five-match ODI series against New Zealand in November.
For now, Rohit appears determined to take his career one match at a time. Whether he will be part of India’s 2027 World Cup campaign remains unanswered, but his latest response suggests that the decision is unlikely to be made anytime soon.
With his form still strong and his fitness improving, the door to the 2027 World Cup remains open.
