The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has launched OneTag, a new FASTag portability service that allows users to change their issuing bank without replacing the physical FASTag installed on their vehicle.
The service has been introduced through the Rajmargyatra app and is aimed at making it easier for FASTag users to switch between banks and service providers. NHAI said the facility could benefit more than 130 million FASTag users across the country.
Under OneTag, users can port their FASTag by logging into the Rajmargyatra app and entering their vehicle registration number. The app will then check whether the FASTag is eligible for porting. Users will need to obtain a six-digit Mobile Verification Code (MVC) from their existing issuing bank before selecting a new bank.
After choosing the new issuer, users have to complete the required KYC and wallet onboarding process. Importantly, the FASTag ID linked to the vehicle remains unchanged, meaning motorists do not have to remove the existing tag from their windshield or wait for a new physical tag.
Once the transfer is completed, the previous issuing bank will close the old FASTag wallet and refund the available balance after making any applicable adjustments. However, users cannot switch banks repeatedly without restrictions. NHAI has introduced a six-month cooling period before an interoperable FASTag can be ported again.
According to NHAI, the new system is also expected to reduce the need for repeated FASTag production, delivery and reissuance. This could lower operational costs while making the process more convenient for vehicle owners.
The OneTag facility is part of NHAI's efforts to improve the overall FASTag ecosystem and give users greater flexibility when choosing their service provider.
The Rajmargyatra app also provides several other FASTag-related services. Users can purchase the FASTag Annual Pass and Local Pass through the app and can also access the national highway emergency helpline 1033.
With OneTag, motorists who are unhappy with their current FASTag issuer can now change banks while continuing to use the same physical tag on their vehicle.
