A 60-year-old man was killed in a tragic road accident in Chankhan area of Sopore in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Ghulam Nabi Ganaie, a resident of Untoo Hamam in Sopore. According to preliminary reports, Ganaie was travelling on a tonga and had reportedly just got down when a truck ran over him.
The impact left him critically injured, and he died at the spot. The incident caused shock and grief among local residents, who expressed concern over road safety and the movement of heavy vehicles through populated areas.
Following the accident, the deceased’s body was shifted to the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Sopore for medico-legal formalities. After the required procedures were completed, the body was handed over to his family for the last rites.
Police have initiated proceedings and are investigating the circumstances that led to the accident. Authorities are also working to establish the sequence of events and determine how the collision occurred.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over traffic safety in busy areas of Sopore, particularly regarding the movement of heavy vehicles where pedestrians and other road users are present.
