The main accused in the alleged harassment and sexual assault of two teenagers in Bihar’s Jamui was slapped by people outside a court on Wednesday after he was produced before a magistrate. A video of the incident showed Nandan Yadav being taken out of the court building amid heavy security.
The case relates to an incident reported on September 19 involving a Class 10 girl and her male friend. According to the police investigation, the two teenagers were returning from a nearby scenic location on a two-wheeler when they were allegedly intercepted by a group of men who confronted them in the name of “moral policing”.
Police allege that the minor girl was subjected to sexual assault while the boy was beaten. The incident later came to public attention after a video showing the alleged assault circulated widely on social media.
The teenagers did not initially approach the police, reportedly because of fear and alleged threats. After the video surfaced, authorities registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act and relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
A Special Investigation Team was formed under sub-divisional police officer Deepti Monali to investigate the case. Police subsequently traced several suspects using information gathered from the viral video. Five people have so far been arrested in connection with the case, according to the report.
Nandan Yadav, identified by police as the main accused, was arrested on Tuesday following an encounter during which he was shot in the leg. He was later brought before the court on Wednesday.
Police have also arrested Nandan’s father, Ganauri Yadav. Officers said he was wanted in connection with a 2003 double-murder case involving two brothers in Pratappur village and had allegedly remained absconding for years.
Investigators are also examining how the video of the incident was recorded and subsequently circulated online. Police said preliminary findings indicate that one of the alleged perpetrators, identified as Ramashish Choudhary, recorded the incident on a mobile phone. Choudhary remains absconding.
Authorities have begun efforts to remove copies of the alleged assault video from social media platforms. Police are examining the circumstances surrounding its recording and circulation as part of the wider investigation.
The case has attracted significant public attention, particularly because the victims were minors and the alleged assault was recorded and circulated online. The investigation is continuing, with police focusing on identifying all those involved and establishing the sequence of events.
The accused persons will face the legal process as the investigation proceeds, while the allegations against them remain subject to the outcome of the case.
