A 31-year-old human resources professional from Delhi, who had been missing for more than 10 days, was allegedly shot dead by his former colleague and her partner following a heated argument, police said. His body was later dumped in a sewage-filled plot in Gurugram.
The deceased has been identified as Yuvraj Singh Manchanda, a resident of Sarita Vihar. He was working as an HR professional at a major real estate company in Gurugram.
According to investigators, Manchanda was killed on September 6. Police said he had gone to Gurugram for a meeting after having lunch with his sister in Delhi. He left at around 4pm and did not return home. When his family tried to contact him, his mobile phone was found switched off.
His family subsequently approached the Lajpat Nagar police station and filed a missing person complaint on September 11.
During the investigation, police found that Manchanda had last spoken to his former colleague, Anya Vats. Her phone was also switched off, which raised suspicion among investigators.
Police said Manchanda and Vats had previously worked together at another major real estate group. Both were removed from the organisation in 2022 following alleged financial irregularities, according to investigators. Manchanda later secured another job as an HR manager, while Vats reportedly did not find similar employment.
Investigators began monitoring Vats and eventually detected a new mobile number being used by her. Analysis of the number reportedly indicated that she was in Uttarakhand.
A police team was then sent to Uttarakhand, where Vats and her partner, Sanyam Sachdeva, were apprehended.
During questioning, police alleged that the two admitted to shooting Manchanda after an argument. Investigators said the incident took place inside a car. After the alleged murder, the body was kept inside the vehicle for several hours before being dumped in a plot filled with sewage water in Sector 70, Gurugram.
Police recovered the body from the location on September 10. Following an autopsy, the remains were cremated on September 14 after initially being classified as unidentified. The victim was subsequently identified as Manchanda.
Investigators have also recovered the alleged murder weapon. Police are continuing to question the two accused to establish the exact motive behind the killing and reconstruct the sequence of events.
Both Vats and Sachdeva were produced before a court and sent to five days of police custody.
The case has raised questions about how the victim's body remained unidentified for several days and how the circumstances surrounding his disappearance unfolded. Police are now examining the available evidence, including phone records and other details, as part of the investigation.
The allegations against the two accused remain subject to the ongoing investigation and court proceedings.
