TORONTO: Canada has reaffirmed India’s position as a “key partner” as Ottawa looks to strengthen relationships with major economies and reduce its dependence on any single country.
Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand described India as an important partner in a statement issued by Global Affairs Canada on Sunday. She highlighted India’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing and most dynamic economies.
Anand’s remarks followed her bilateral meeting with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Saturday.
Jaishankar described the meeting as a “productive discussion” and said the two countries were preparing to take their relationship to a higher level.
According to the Canadian government’s readout, the ministers discussed progress in implementing the Canada-India roadmap, which covers several areas of cooperation, including trade, security, energy, mobility, innovation and defence.
The two sides also reiterated their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and advancing shared priorities through continued implementation of the roadmap.
The latest statements come against the backdrop of Canada’s broader effort to diversify its international economic and diplomatic relationships.
A day before her meeting with Jaishankar, Anand addressed the UN General Assembly and warned that major powers were stepping away from global economic cooperation and dismantling established forms of economic integration.
She argued that Canada could no longer afford to rely too heavily on any single international partner and needed to develop stronger relationships with both traditional and emerging partners.
“We are exploring new opportunities with partners in the Indo-Pacific, the Gulf, and Latin America,” Anand said, while also referring to the importance of developing renewed partnerships with large economies such as India and China.
The Canadian foreign minister said the country was seeking to build a broader network of partnerships to support economic stability, peace and prosperity.
Her remarks reflect Ottawa’s efforts to respond to changes in the global economic environment, including growing uncertainty around trade and international economic cooperation.
For India and Canada, the latest diplomatic engagement also signals continued work on rebuilding and expanding bilateral ties across multiple sectors.
The two countries have maintained diplomatic relations for nearly eight decades and have significant people-to-people connections. Trade, energy, education, technology, defence and mobility remain important areas of potential cooperation.
The reference to the Canada-India roadmap indicates that both governments are focusing on practical areas of engagement rather than limiting the relationship to diplomatic discussions.
Anand’s latest description of India as a “key partner” also comes at a time when Canada is seeking stronger links across the Indo-Pacific region.
For New Delhi, closer engagement with Ottawa could provide opportunities in areas ranging from trade and investment to energy, technology and mobility.
The latest meeting between Jaishankar and Anand therefore comes as part of a wider effort by both countries to advance their bilateral relationship through structured cooperation and the implementation of agreed priorities.
