Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi has recalled a candid piece of advice that veteran actress Jaya Bachchan gave his wife, Maria Goretti, before their marriage. According to Arshad, Jaya warned Maria that marrying an actor can be one of the most difficult things in life because of the unusual demands and circumstances that come with an actor’s profession.
Speaking to Filmigyan, Arshad said Jaya spoke to Maria from her own experience of being married to megastar Amitabh Bachchan for more than five decades. He described Jaya as a “very intelligent woman” and recalled her telling Maria that being married to an actor requires a different kind of understanding.
Arshad explained that actors often find themselves surrounded by interesting and attractive people as part of their work. He said this can sometimes put relationships in situations that are different from those experienced by ordinary couples.
“Jaya is a very intelligent woman,” Arshad said while recalling the conversation. He added that she asked Maria whether she was prepared for the challenges that could come with marrying an actor.
According to Arshad, Jaya’s advice was based on the fact that an actor’s profession can involve circumstances that may not feel “normal” for a conventional relationship. He said couples have to develop enough trust and understanding to deal with those situations.
Arshad also reflected on the importance of love and commitment in such relationships. He suggested that partners need to look beyond the attention and pressures surrounding actors and maintain a strong bond with each other.
Jaya Bachchan herself has previously spoken about her long marriage to Amitabh Bachchan. The couple first met while working on Guddi in 1971 and grew closer while shooting Ek Nazar in 1972. They married in 1973 after the success of Zanjeer.
The couple has two children, Shweta Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, and three grandchildren — Navya Naveli Nanda, Agastya Nanda and Aaradhya Bachchan.
In a 2025 interview with Mojo Story, Jaya also spoke about her marriage and said she had been with the same man for more than five decades. She described her relationship with Amitabh as one based on deep love and recalled it as love at first sight.
Arshad and Maria have been married for many years and have two children. His latest recollection offers a glimpse into the practical advice Jaya shared with Maria before the couple began their married life together.
