Washington: The Donald Trump administration has launched a major new economic campaign against Iran, targeting military officials, cyber groups, weapons procurement networks and companies involved in the country’s oil trade. The initiative, called “Operation Economic Outcast,” was announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on August 24 as Washington seeks to intensify pressure on Tehran.
The US Treasury said the campaign is designed to cut off the financial networks that help sustain Iran’s government. As part of the first round of measures, nearly 60 individuals, entities and vessels linked to Iran were targeted for their alleged involvement in illicit procurement, cyber operations and petroleum and petrochemical revenue networks.
The sanctions also target Iranian military officials accused by Washington of helping procure weapons and directing attacks against US forces and regional partners. Iranian entities involved in gathering intelligence for military targeting and a procurement network linked to Iran’s missile programmes were also included.
A major part of the new measures focuses on Iran’s cyber activities. Washington has accused an Iran-based cyber group of carrying out extensive intrusions into US critical infrastructure. The latest action was coordinated with the FBI, which recently announced indictments against eight Iranian nationals allegedly linked to hacking campaigns targeting US energy companies, defence contractors, healthcare institutions and government offices.
The US is also turning its attention to Iran’s oil lifeline. Shipping companies, brokers and vessels involved in transporting Iranian petroleum and petrochemical products through countries including the UAE, China, Singapore and parts of Europe have come under scrutiny. Washington says revenues from these activities help fund Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and other state-linked organisations.
Bessent described the initiative as an economic offensive intended to isolate Iran from the global financial system. The administration has warned that countries and businesses continuing significant dealings with Tehran could also face secondary sanctions. The sectors under particular scrutiny include shipping, aviation, gold, technology and digital assets.
China, Turkey and the UAE are expected to face particular attention because of their economic links with Iran, although Washington has not formally announced a list of countries that will immediately face secondary sanctions. China remains especially significant because it has been Iran’s major oil customer.
The new campaign marks a shift toward intensified economic pressure as Washington seeks to restrict Tehran’s ability to generate revenue and maintain its military and regional activities. The impact of the sanctions, and whether Iran’s major trading partners comply with US demands, will determine how effective “Operation Economic Outcast” becomes.
