Tamil Nadu unveils ₹947 crore highway upgrade

Tamil Nadu Public Works Minister Aadhav Arjuna has announced a ₹947.46 crore highway four-laning project, while assuring the state Assembly that Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) would be prepared for 182 demands related to bypass roads and other infrastructure projects.

The announcement came during Question Hour, as legislators from different parties raised concerns over the condition of roads, traffic congestion and frequent accidents across the state.

The major project involves upgrading a 43.16-km stretch of National Highway 75 between Pathalampalli and Latheri into a four-lane road. The project will also include an 11.85-km bypass covering 13 villages. Land acquisition for the bypass is currently underway, while proposals for new bridges, culverts and improvements at major junctions are awaiting final administrative approval.

Minister Arjuna said road infrastructure works were already being planned in important industrial corridors and accident-prone areas. He also informed the Assembly that 182 MLAs had submitted requests for bypass infrastructure, and assured members that the government was examining the demands systematically.

Several legislators highlighted specific road-related problems in their constituencies. DMK member and former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam sought dedicated bypass roads along the busy Madurai-Theni corridor, particularly around Usilampatti and Andipatti, to ease traffic bottlenecks.

CPI member T Ramachandran demanded bypass infrastructure to handle the large number of commercial vehicles travelling from nearby industrial areas. Cumbum MLA Jagannath Mishra raised concerns over the high number of fatal road accidents in his constituency and called for immediate action.

AIADMK member Arunmozhi Devan suggested constructing a roundabout or elevated flyover at accident-prone intersections to improve road safety.

PMK legislator G Kumar sought a high-level bridge connecting Agaracheri and Koodanagaram. The minister said the proposal was currently under initial evaluation.

TVK MLA V Sathyabama also raised the need for road widening and strengthening along the Tiruppur–Sirupuluvapatti to 15 Velampalayam stretch and other congested locations.

The government’s proposed road projects are aimed at improving connectivity, reducing congestion and addressing accident-prone stretches. The minister's assurance on DPRs for the 182 demands is expected to provide a roadmap for assessing and prioritising further infrastructure works across Tamil Nadu.
