Parineeti Chopra’s latest film Reporting Live, directed by Dhruv Tripathi, explores the challenges of investigative journalism through the story of a reporter who uncovers a dangerous conspiracy. Streaming on Netflix, the crime thriller has a promising premise and some strong performances, but predictable writing prevents it from delivering the excitement expected from an investigative drama.
The film follows Sandhya, played by Parineeti Chopra, a journalist eager to make her first major breakthrough on prime-time television. Working alongside video journalist Vinod, portrayed by Deven Bhojani, she begins investigating a bridge collapse in Visargao that kills 15 people after a bus plunges into a river. What initially appears to be an accident soon leads the duo towards an alleged illegal sand-mining racket linked to the tragedy.
As Sandhya and Vinod pursue the truth, they encounter threats to their careers and lives. Their investigation gradually exposes the dangerous connections between powerful interests and the incident.
One of the film’s strongest aspects is its newsroom atmosphere. The portrayal of journalists working under pressure feels grounded, without unnecessary glamourisation. The early portions move at a brisk pace, introducing the characters and establishing the professional challenges they face. The relationship between Sandhya and Vinod also adds emotional warmth to the narrative.
However, the film struggles to maintain its momentum as the investigation progresses. Several plot developments become predictable well before their intended impact, making the central mystery less engaging. The reasons behind Sandhya’s superior attempting to suppress the investigation also become apparent too early, reducing the tension.
The antagonist, played by Nasser, relies on familiar conventions rather than offering anything particularly surprising. The background score does little to strengthen the suspense and occasionally becomes repetitive.
Performance-wise, Parineeti Chopra delivers a decent portrayal of a determined journalist. Deven Bhojani stands out with a warm and convincing performance, making the emotional aspects of his character particularly effective. Shekhar Suman fits comfortably into the role of a calculating businessman, while Adil Hussain brings natural charm to his part.
The film draws comparisons with Hansal Mehta’s Scoop, which explores the pressures and complications of journalism in greater depth. While Reporting Live attempts to deliver a similar blend of crime, media and institutional influence, its limited runtime leaves little room for deeper character development.
Overall, Reporting Live is watchable thanks to its engaging premise, brisk pacing and capable cast. However, predictable storytelling and a lack of sustained suspense prevent it from reaching its full potential.
