Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has stepped down as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, months before the state Assembly elections. The leadership change followed an organisational review by newly appointed Punjab Congress in-charge Sachin Pilot, who held consultations with senior leaders, MPs and other party functionaries before submitting his assessment to the Congress high command.
Warring, who is also the Congress MP from Ludhiana, changed his social media profile to describe himself as the “former president, Punjab Congress”. Congress sources said he submitted his resignation after the party leadership conveyed its decision to replace him. Warring later said he was a “disciplined soldier” of the party and would continue to work wherever he was assigned.
The change comes amid prolonged differences within the Punjab Congress. Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi and supporters of Warring had been involved in disagreements over the functioning of the state unit. According to reports, the Congress leadership had earlier attempted to balance the competing groups by retaining Warring as state president while giving Channi a key role in the party's election campaign structure. However, differences within the organisation continued.
Sachin Pilot took charge as the AICC general secretary in charge of Punjab on September 5, replacing Bhupesh Baghel. After assuming responsibility, Pilot met several senior leaders, including Channi and Warring, as well as members of the party's parliamentary group. His consultations were followed by an organisational assessment that recommended a change in the state leadership, according to people familiar with the developments.
The timing is significant because Punjab is scheduled to go to the Assembly polls in 2027. The Congress is now looking for a new state president who can work with different groups within the party and manage the organisational structure ahead of the election campaign.
Several names have emerged in discussions over Warring's successor. Former Punjab minister Vijay Inder Singla and Jalandhar Cantonment MLA Pargat Singh are among those being considered. Other names mentioned in reports include Gurdaspur MP Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa and other senior state leaders. The Congress has not yet formally announced the new Punjab unit chief.
The political background also includes the Congress's performance in the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections. The Aam Aadmi Party won 92 of the state's 117 seats, while the Congress secured 18. With the next Assembly election approaching, the party's latest organisational changes are focused on restructuring its state unit and addressing internal differences.
Warring became Punjab Congress president in April 2022, following the party's defeat in that year's Assembly election. He later won the Ludhiana Lok Sabha seat in the 2024 general election. His departure now marks another major organisational change for the Congress in Punjab as the party prepares for the next electoral contest.
