Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has refused to back down amid the controversy surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo's departure from the national team camp, insisting that he has done nothing wrong and that the same rules apply to every player.
The dispute came into focus after Ronaldo left Portugal's camp ahead of the team's clash with Norway. The veteran forward had reportedly been unhappy after being left on the bench for the Norway match and remained an unused substitute despite warming up during the second half.
Jesus later confirmed that Ronaldo was not expected to start the following match against Denmark, further escalating the situation. Ronaldo subsequently left the camp, creating widespread discussion around the relationship between the Portugal captain and the new manager.
Despite the controversy, Portugal produced a strong performance against Denmark, winning 4-2. Bruno Fernandes played a key role in the match with two assists, while four different Portuguese players found the net.
After the game, Jesus was repeatedly questioned about the Ronaldo situation. The 72-year-old coach said he would provide a full explanation after Portugal's next match and insisted that he had acted within his responsibilities as manager.
“I will explain everything after the last game. I have many years in football and I know that I did nothing that should have caused things to go differently,” Jesus said.
He added that he would not avoid the issue or hide from questions about the dispute. At the same time, Jesus made it clear that Ronaldo's status and achievements in football remain beyond dispute.
“Nobody can take away what Cristiano represents. He's an icon and that's not in question,” the Portugal coach said.
Jesus also stressed that players with established reputations could still be subject to the same team rules as everyone else.
“There are players with status. That much is crystal clear. But I'll say it again: the rules are the same for everyone,” he said after the Denmark victory.
The match also highlighted Portugal's attacking options in Ronaldo's absence. Gonçalo Ramos, who had been preferred in attack, played an important role and scored. He also assisted João Cancelo for Portugal's opening goal. João Félix and Vitinha were the other scorers, while Bruno Fernandes controlled the midfield and contributed two assists.
Portugal's players have largely avoided becoming involved in the controversy. Vitinha said the squad had focused entirely on the match and did not want to discuss the situation surrounding Ronaldo.
“We try to remain out of that story. We focused on the game, and it was an incredible performance,” Vitinha said.
Ramos similarly played down the impact of the dispute, saying the situation had not affected the team's preparation or desire to win.
The Ronaldo-Jesus dispute has therefore become a major talking point around the Portugal camp, but the manager has indicated that he intends to address the matter publicly after the next game. For now, Jesus continues to emphasise team rules and discipline while acknowledging Ronaldo's importance and status in Portuguese football.
