Widespread flooding intensified across southern China on Tuesday after heavy rainfall linked to Typhoon Narra submerged homes, shops and roads, forcing tens of thousands of people to leave affected areas. Authorities in Guangxi have stepped up evacuation and relief operations as rivers and water levels continue to rise.
The worst-affected areas include Chongzuo in Guangxi, where more than 15,000 residents were relocated after water levels climbed above a record recorded in 2008. Across Guangxi, authorities have moved around 54,000 people to safer locations, according to state television reports.
Narra has lingered over the Beibu Gulf, also known as the Gulf of Tonkin, dumping heavy rain over Guangxi and nearby provinces including Guangdong and Hainan. The persistent rainfall has left streets flooded and homes and businesses partially submerged, while emergency crews have been working to rescue residents from inundated areas.
The storm has also affected northern Vietnam, where heavy rain caused flooding, landslides and damage to infrastructure and agricultural land. The combined impact across China and Vietnam has added pressure on emergency services as authorities continue to monitor rainfall and river levels.
Meanwhile, another tropical system is raising concerns farther east. Typhoon Saudel is moving towards southern Japan and northern Taiwan, threatening the region with heavy rain, strong winds and rough seas. Japan’s Okinawa region is preparing for severe weather, while Taiwan is expecting torrential rainfall later this week.
Taiwan is already dealing with the effects of a separate weather system. Heavy rainfall has caused flooding in parts of the island, with one person reported dead and four others missing. Southern areas, including Tainan and Kaohsiung, have experienced exceptionally heavy rainfall.
Forecasters are closely watching Saudel’s movement as its track could bring further disruption across East Asia. Current projections indicate that the storm could move towards China’s Fujian province later this week after affecting areas around Japan and Taiwan.
With more rain forecast across parts of southern China, authorities are maintaining emergency measures in flood-prone areas. The back-to-back weather threats have placed several parts of East Asia on alert, with residents and emergency agencies preparing for further heavy rainfall and potentially dangerous conditions.
