News Desk: Mohanlal’s reduced screen time in Jailer 2 has sparked disappointment among fans, with the Malayalam superstar’s costume designer, Jishad Shamsudeen, publicly criticising the film’s makers for cutting several of his scenes.
In a post on Instagram on Thursday, Jishad revealed that three distinct looks designed for Mohanlal’s character, Mathew, were removed from the final version of the film. He also claimed that a scene featuring the actor in the trailer was subsequently trimmed.
The designer shared several looks he had created for Mohanlal and expressed disappointment that much of his work did not make it to the screen.
“From my experience in cinema, trimming scenes involving a superstar like Mohanlal Sir is simply unnecessary,” Jishad wrote. He also said he would not be part of a potential third instalment of the franchise.
The designer clarified that his work was driven by his respect for Mohanlal and his commitment to the actor’s fans, rather than commercial success or box-office figures.
Fans support the designer
Jishad’s post received considerable attention from fans, many of whom expressed frustration over Mohanlal’s limited screen presence in the sequel.
Several users questioned why the actor was invited to appear in the film if his role was going to be reduced. Others praised the designer for openly expressing his disappointment.
The debate has renewed discussion about the treatment of cameo appearances by major stars in big-budget films.
Mohanlal returns as Mathew
Mohanlal reprises his role as Mathew, a flamboyant smuggler and friend of Rajinikanth’s character, Muthuvel Pandian. The character was introduced in the first Jailer film, released in 2023, and became popular for his stylish appearance and screen presence.
In Jailer 2, Mohanlal appears in a key sequence during the climax. However, Jishad’s comments suggest that the actor’s original role may have been considerably larger before scenes were removed during editing.
The film is directed by Nelson Dilipkumar and stars Rajinikanth in the lead role.
Neither the filmmakers nor the director had responded to the costume designer’s criticism in the report. Meanwhile, the controversy has added to the discussion surrounding Mohanlal’s cameo and whether audiences were given enough of the superstar in the sequel.
