Guwahati, October 12: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday launched a sharp attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, accusing him and his party of undermining the foundations of Indian democracy amid the ongoing controversy over electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma alleged that the Congress was applying double standards to electoral outcomes. He claimed that the party questioned election results when it lost but accepted them when they went in its favour.
The Assam Chief Minister also criticised Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders for marching towards the Supreme Court after Chief Justice of India Surya Kant reportedly declined their request for a meeting. Sarma argued that constitutional institutions should not be subjected to political pressure over electoral disagreements.
The remarks came as thousands of opposition supporters gathered in central Delhi on Monday. Rahul Gandhi and other INDIA bloc leaders participated in a march towards the Supreme Court, raising concerns over alleged electoral irregularities and the functioning of the Election Commission of India.
The opposition's legal team also filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities linked to the SIR exercise. The petition reportedly questions the deletion of voters from electoral rolls and seeks judicial intervention in the matter.
Sarma further announced that the BJP in Assam would organise peaceful mass rallies at district headquarters from October 13 to October 31. According to his statement, the campaign would highlight the BJP's opposition to what it describes as attempts to pressure constitutional institutions and its objections to the Congress's position on SIR.
The Chief Minister said the programme would also reaffirm the party's support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his vision of a developed India by 2047.
The latest exchange has intensified the political confrontation between the BJP and the Congress over electoral transparency, voter-list revision and the independence of constitutional institutions. The allegations and counter-allegations are likely to remain a major point of contention as the legal proceedings unfold.
