Chandigarh, October 12: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has reportedly summoned senior Punjab IPS officer and Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma to appear at its Chandigarh office on October 19 in connection with a controversy involving a viral video linked to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
According to reports, the case concerns allegations that forensic and cyber analysis reports were fabricated to claim that the controversial video featuring Mann was generated using artificial intelligence (AI).
The matter originated from an FIR registered by Gurugram Police, which arrested two men, identified as Arun Mehandru and Ankit, over their alleged involvement in preparing the disputed reports. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the reports and the possible roles of individuals connected to the case.
The video reportedly triggered controversy after allegedly showing liquor being splashed on photographs of Sikh Gurus. Its content and authenticity became subjects of public debate, with political leaders demanding clarity over the incident and the subsequent forensic findings.
The ED has reportedly extended its inquiry to Swapan Sharma and other individuals, seeking information about the alleged fabrication of forensic evidence. However, the precise scope of the agency’s investigation and the specific allegations against those summoned have not been officially established.
Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia also raised the issue on social media, alleging that the matter involved sacrilege and fabricated forensic evidence. He questioned the handling of the controversy and accused Mann of misleading Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
The allegations remain under investigation, and the claims made by political leaders have not been independently established as facts.
A summons for questioning does not establish guilt or prove that the person summoned committed an offence. Further details are awaited regarding the ED’s line of inquiry and the evidence being examined.
The case has added another dimension to the political controversy surrounding the viral video, raising questions about digital evidence, forensic investigations and accountability in politically sensitive cases.
