New Delhi, October 13: A delegation of women Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is scheduled to meet President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday to submit a complaint against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam over allegations of sexual misconduct involving female students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The delegation is seeking action against the Manipur MP, including his dismissal from Parliament.
According to Hindustan Times, the meeting was scheduled for 1:30 pm, as the controversy surrounding Akoijam continued to draw political attention. The BJP has demanded that the Congress take strict action against the lawmaker, accusing the opposition party of shielding him.
The development follows JNU's decision last week to remove Akoijam from his position as a professor with immediate effect after its Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) examined complaints filed by 11 female students. The university said the action followed its internal inquiry under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) framework.
According to the complaints cited in media reports, the students alleged that Akoijam invited female students to his campus residence under the pretext of academic meetings that continued late into the night. The allegations also included claims of inappropriate comments and non-consensual physical proximity.
Akoijam has denied the allegations and questioned the manner in which the inquiry was conducted, claiming that a proper investigation had not taken place. The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers' Association (JNUTA) has also criticised the university's decision, describing the termination as hasty and raising concerns about the process followed.
The controversy has taken a further legal turn, with Delhi Police registering a case against the Congress MP following a complaint by JNU's chief security officer on October 11. The allegations remain subject to the relevant legal processes, and the registration of a case does not by itself establish guilt.
The BJP has maintained that the Congress should take the matter seriously and act against its MP. The proposed meeting with President Murmu is part of the party's efforts to raise the issue at the highest constitutional level.
The case has also sparked a wider debate over the handling of sexual misconduct complaints in educational institutions, the responsibility of political parties when allegations involve elected representatives, and the importance of fair and transparent investigations.
As the political dispute intensifies, the next steps will depend on the representations made by the BJP delegation, the response from the Congress and the progress of the relevant legal proceedings. Akoijam has denied the allegations, while the university has defended its decision following its internal inquiry.
