New Delhi: Congress MP Shashi Tharoor found himself unexpectedly drawn into a social media exchange after Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) co-convener Saurav Das mentioned him while sharing a video of Prime Minister Narendra Modi visiting a temple in Delhi on Wednesday.
Modi visited the Sri Vinayaka Mandir in the national capital as he marked 25 years since he first took charge of a government. During the visit, the Prime Minister offered prayers and performed religious rituals, including offering water to a Shivling.
Sharing a clip of the temple visit on X, Das tagged Tharoor and suggested that the visuals reminded him of one of the Congress leader’s earlier comments. In a post that appeared to play on Tharoor’s reputation for using elaborate vocabulary, Das wrote a highly formal request asking him to repeat the particular observation.
Tharoor, however, appeared unsure about what Das was referring to. Responding to the post, the Congress MP said he would have no problem doing so if he knew which comment was being referenced and asked Das to explain.
Das did not immediately clarify the specific remark he had in mind.
However, several social media users speculated that the reference could be to Tharoor’s controversial 2018 “scorpion sitting on a Shivling” comment. The remark had attracted considerable political attention at the time and led to criticism from BJP leaders.
Tharoor’s response suggested that he was unaware of the specific reference intended by Das.
The exchange came on a day when Modi was marking 25 years in public life as the head of a government. On Wednesday, the Prime Minister reflected on his political journey, recalling that he had first taken oath as Gujarat chief minister on October 7, 2001.
Addressing a gathering in Delhi, Modi described the 25-year journey as a period of continuous public service. He thanked people across the country, BJP workers, NDA allies and political colleagues for their support over the years.
Modi said the milestone was not an occasion for personal celebration but an opportunity to express gratitude. He emphasised the theme of service and said his political journey had been driven by a sense of duty rather than personal ambition.
The Prime Minister also spoke about the role of both supporters and critics in his journey. According to Modi, supporters provided encouragement, while criticism encouraged him to look within and improve.
He concluded by saying that completing 25 years should not be viewed as a reason to stop. Instead, he described it as the beginning of another phase of service and reiterated the message of “We will do it” while referring to India’s goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
The brief social media exchange between Das and Tharoor added a lighter moment to an otherwise politically significant day in the national capital.
