Chandigarh: An LLB student at Panjab University has died in an apparent suicide at a campus hostel, Chandigarh Police said. The student was identified as Chatanniya Singh, a resident of Panipat, Haryana, and a student of the University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS).
Police have begun an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the student's death. Officials have not yet disclosed a confirmed reason or motive, and further details are awaited as the inquiry continues.
Reports from local media identified Singh as a 22-year-old law student staying at Boys' Hostel No. 4 on the university campus. He was reportedly enrolled in the fifth year of the integrated law programme.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, according to reports. A fellow student reportedly alerted hostel authorities after discovering Singh in his room. Police subsequently reached the campus and began the investigation.
The death has cast a shadow over the Panjab University campus, where student council election campaigning is currently underway. The incident has also renewed attention on the emotional and academic pressures that students can sometimes face while living away from home.
Authorities are expected to examine all relevant circumstances as part of the investigation. Officials have not announced any conclusion regarding what may have led to the student's death.
The incident comes only days after another student death at IIT Delhi, where a 31-year-old MSc Physics student died on campus. Delhi Police had said an investigation was underway in that case as well.
With the latest incident, concerns about student wellbeing and access to support services on university campuses are again in focus. Experts and student groups have frequently stressed the importance of making counselling and mental-health support easily accessible to young people facing distress.
For now, Chandigarh Police are continuing their investigation into the Panjab University case, while further information about the circumstances surrounding Singh's death is awaited.
