India Make History, Beat China 1-0 to Win Women’s Hockey Gold

India created history at the 2026 Asian Games by defeating China 1-0 in the women’s hockey final to win the gold medal. The victory ended a 44-year wait for India, whose women’s hockey team had last won the Asian Games gold in 1982.

Lalremsiami scored the decisive goal in the first quarter, marking her 200th international appearance for India in memorable fashion. Her powerful strike from the left found the far corner of the net and gave India an early 1-0 lead.

China responded with pressure and created several opportunities, but India’s defence stood firm throughout the match. Goalkeeper Savita Punia produced a crucial save from a penalty stroke, while the Indian defenders repeatedly prevented China from converting its penalty corners.

Captain Salima Tete played a key role in India’s performance. Her work in midfield helped create the opening for Lalremsiami’s goal. Tete also played through an injury during the match before returning to the field to help guide her team through the final stages.

India went into half-time with a narrow 1-0 advantage. China continued to dominate possession and attack after the break, but the Indian defence remained organised and disciplined. The Chinese team even removed its goalkeeper late in the match to add another outfield player, but India managed to protect its lead.

The final whistle triggered emotional celebrations among the Indian players and supporters. The result also secured India a direct qualification spot for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.

The gold medal is particularly significant for Indian women’s hockey. Their previous Asian Games gold had come in 1982, making this victory the end of a 44-year drought.

The final had also been delayed by around an hour after the Indian team bus was reportedly held up by an accident on the highway. Despite the disruption, India eventually took control of the contest and delivered when it mattered most.

For Lalremsiami, the occasion was even more special as she reached the 200-match milestone with the winning goal. For Salima Tete and her teammates, it was a historic triumph that added another major achievement to Indian hockey’s growing record.

India’s 1-0 victory over China will now be remembered as one of the defining moments of the 2026 Asian Games, with the women’s team returning home as Asian champions and Olympic qualifiers.
