India head coach Khalid Jamil has urged his players to embrace the pressure and enjoy the challenge as India prepare to face Brazil in an international friendly in Kolkata on Saturday.
The match will see India take on one of the biggest names in world football, with Brazil being coached by Carlo Ancelotti. Speaking ahead of the game, Jamil acknowledged the pressure surrounding the fixture but insisted that the result was not something his team could control.
“The result is not in our hands but if you give your best, anything can happen,” Jamil said.
India defender Anwar Ali, who joined Jamil at the pre-match press conference, said the team’s focus would be on avoiding mistakes, following the coach’s instructions and giving everything on the pitch.
India enter the match after a 1-1 draw against Panama in Bengaluru on September 25. Jamil’s side is expected to maintain a similar approach against Brazil, with defensive organisation likely to be a key part of the plan. India could look to remain compact at the back and use quick counter-attacks, including long passes to bypass Brazil’s midfield.
The Indian team has benefited from an extended preparation camp that began nearly three weeks before the match. Several Indian Super League clubs released their players early for international duty, allowing Jamil and his coaching staff more time to work with the squad.
The longer preparation period followed discussions between the national team setup and five ISL clubs. AIFF deputy secretary-general Satyanarayan Muthyalu said the discussions marked an effort to improve cooperation between clubs and the national team.
Brazil are also using the friendly as part of a rebuilding process. Ancelotti said he is still working towards identifying his final squad and sees the match as an opportunity to assess new players.
Several relatively inexperienced players are part of the Brazil squad. Goalkeepers Hugo Souza, Pedro Morisco and Otavio have only three international appearances between them. Other young players, including Gabriel Bontempo, Breno Bidon and Arthur Dias, have recently made their international debuts.
Ancelotti described the fixture as an important opportunity to begin a new cycle of players for Brazil. He also identified India forward Ryan Williams as a player who could pose a threat because of his pace.
Brazil captain Marquinhos, meanwhile, highlighted India goalkeeper and captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, who has nearly 90 international appearances. If selected against Brazil, Sandhu will reach his 90th international appearance.
For India, the match represents a major test against a world-class opponent and an opportunity for the players to measure themselves against some of the game's most experienced names. For Brazil, it provides another chance to evaluate emerging players as Ancelotti continues shaping his squad.
The match in Kolkata is expected to draw significant attention, with both teams entering the fixture with different objectives but the same focus: using the international friendly as an important step in their preparations for the next phase of their respective campaigns.
