India produced another golden moment at the Asian Games 2026 as the women's compound archery team successfully defended its title with a 238-234 victory over China on Wednesday.
The Indian trio of Chikitha Taniparthi, Prithika Pradeep and Jyothi Surekha Vennam delivered a composed performance in the final, maintaining their accuracy under pressure to secure the gold medal. Their winning score of 238 also equalled the world-record mark set by South Korea at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon.
The victory prompted congratulations from President Droupadi Murmu and several senior Union ministers. Murmu praised the three archers for their precision, composure and teamwork, saying their achievement had made the country proud.
Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also congratulated the trio and highlighted that their score equalled the world record. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh were among the other leaders who hailed the team's performance.
The Indian team had to overcome South Korea in the semifinal before facing China in the gold-medal contest. Against China, the Indian archers maintained their rhythm throughout the final and finished with a four-point advantage.
The result continues India's strong record in the women's compound team event at the Asian Games. India had won silver in the event in 2018 and bronze in 2014 before claiming gold in the previous edition. The latest victory means India have now successfully retained the title.
The gold medal also added to India's growing medal tally at the ongoing Asian Games. According to the figures cited after the archery final, India had reached 54 medals, including seven gold, 21 silver and 26 bronze.
For Jyothi Surekha Vennam, the victory adds another major achievement to an already successful international career. Alongside debutant teammates Chikitha and Prithika, she played a key role in India's successful title defence.
The Indian archery contingent will now look to build on this momentum in the remaining events of the Games. With the women's compound team once again finishing on top, India have strengthened their presence in one of the country's established medal-winning disciplines.
