New Delhi: Gurugram’s recurring waterlogging and traffic problems have triggered fresh political debate after BJP MP Dharambir Singh said the city’s major infrastructure issues would be addressed under the 2047 masterplan.
Speaking to NDTV after heavy rain once again disrupted normal life in Gurugram, Singh said the city’s present difficulties were largely linked to its outdated planning. He pointed out that the original plans were prepared decades ago, at a time when there was no expectation that Gurugram would grow into a major urban and corporate centre with such a large population and vehicle count.
Singh, who represents the Bhiwani-Mahendragarh Lok Sabha constituency, said the city’s drainage network had also been affected by construction and encroachment. According to him, several old drains have become narrower because of development, making it difficult to expand them now.
The BJP MP also attributed some of the recent flooding to sudden and intense rainfall. He said that heavy rain in a short period causes large quantities of water to accumulate on roads, while the existing drainage network takes time to clear it.
Gurugram has once again faced severe disruption during the current monsoon. Several roads were submerged after heavy rainfall, with traffic movement affected and school buses reportedly facing difficulties on flooded stretches. The recurring waterlogging has raised questions about the city’s drainage and urban planning.
When asked when residents could expect a permanent solution, Singh pointed to the proposed 2047 masterplan. He said the new plan was intended to prepare Gurugram for future requirements and claimed that the city’s major problems would be addressed as part of that long-term development strategy.
Singh also defended the work being carried out by the government and administration, saying authorities were making efforts to control waterlogging and traffic but that all problems could not be solved immediately.
Another BJP MP from Haryana, Rao Inderjit Singh, offered a different explanation for Gurugram’s drainage crisis. He blamed earlier development policies for construction over traditional drainage channels that historically carried water from the Aravalli hills towards the Yamuna. He argued that the consequences of those changes continue to affect the city today.
Rao Inderjit Singh said that underground tunnels following the routes of the old drainage channels could provide a more permanent solution. He compared the present measures to temporary relief and said the government was working to arrange funds for larger infrastructure projects.
The remarks have drawn attention because Gurugram is one of India’s most important corporate and technology hubs, yet its residents continue to face severe waterlogging during periods of heavy rain. The debate now centres on whether long-term plans can solve problems that residents are experiencing during every monsoon.
For the moment, the 2047 masterplan has been presented as the larger roadmap for Gurugram’s future infrastructure. However, the immediate challenge remains dealing with waterlogging, traffic disruption and drainage problems during the ongoing rainy season.
