Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team camp amid a fresh dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus, adding another controversial episode to the veteran forward’s international career. The development comes as Ronaldo approaches the landmark of 1,000 career goals.
The 41-year-old forward was reportedly unhappy after being left on the bench during Portugal’s highly anticipated clash against Norway. Despite warming up during the second half, Ronaldo was not brought onto the field. Reports then suggested that Jesus had planned to keep him among the substitutes again for the upcoming match against Denmark.
The situation escalated when Ronaldo reportedly left the national team camp. The episode has attracted significant attention because of the forward’s long-standing status as one of Portugal’s most important players.
Jesus has defended his decision-making, maintaining that the same rules apply to every player. The manager’s approach has highlighted the balance between Ronaldo’s stature within Portuguese football and the coach’s authority over team selection.
This is not the first time Ronaldo has been involved in a high-profile disagreement with a coach or club during the later stages of his career. His second spell at Manchester United ended amid a public breakdown in relations with manager Erik ten Hag. Ronaldo was fined after leaving the stadium before the final whistle during one match, while his subsequent interview with Piers Morgan featured strong criticism of the club, its management and facilities.
His departure from Real Madrid in 2018 was also sudden. Ronaldo left the Spanish club for Juventus after winning four Champions League titles with Madrid and establishing himself as one of the club’s greatest goalscorers. He did not receive a traditional farewell match at the Santiago Bernabeu.
His Juventus spell eventually ended with another unexpected departure. Ronaldo returned to Manchester United in 2021, but the reunion lasted only around 18 months before his relationship with the club deteriorated.
Ronaldo later moved to Saudi Arabia, joining Al-Nassr, in a transfer that had a major impact on the profile of the Saudi Pro League. Several other prominent international players subsequently moved to the league.
At international level, Ronaldo remains a central figure in Portugal’s history. He has won the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles with the national side. However, his role has gradually changed as he has entered the later stages of his career.
During the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Ronaldo was dropped to the bench during Portugal’s knockout-stage matches, with Gonçalo Ramos starting in his place. Portugal were eventually eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Fernando Santos subsequently left the position of Portugal manager, while Roberto Martínez continued to select Ronaldo regularly after taking charge. Questions about Ronaldo’s role in the national team continued as Portugal sought to maintain its attacking options.
The appointment of Jorge Jesus had initially raised expectations that Ronaldo would continue to play an important role, given their previous association at Al-Nassr. However, Jesus has made clear that selection decisions will be based on his assessment of the team.
With Ronaldo now approaching the 1,000-goal milestone, the latest dispute has once again placed his relationship with coaches and his changing role at the centre of attention.
