Country Music Legend Dolly Parton Dies at 80

Dolly Parton, the legendary American country music singer, songwriter, actress and philanthropist, has died at the age of 80. Parton died in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday, August 25, 2026. Her publicist confirmed that she died at Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center after a brief battle with cancer, surrounded by loved ones.

Parton leaves behind one of the most remarkable careers in modern music. Over nearly six decades, she became one of the world's most recognisable entertainers, known for her distinctive voice, songwriting, colourful personality and unmistakable stage style.

She wrote hundreds of songs during her career, including enduring classics such as “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors” and “I Will Always Love You.” Her songs have generated more than 100 million sales worldwide and more than 1 billion online streams, making her one of the most successful female artists in music history.

Parton's success extended far beyond country music. She became a successful actress, appearing in films including 9 to 5 and Steel Magnolias, while also building a major business and entertainment empire. Her career earned her 11 Grammy Awards, including a Lifetime Achievement Award, and inductions into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Her influence was also deeply connected to philanthropy. Through the Dollywood Foundation's Imagination Library, she helped provide millions of books to children around the world. She also supported medical research and charitable causes, including a $1 million contribution toward COVID-19 vaccine research.

Parton had continued working despite health difficulties in recent months. Just days before her death, she said she was still focused on her projects and hoped to continue bringing her plans to life. Her passing has since prompted tributes from musicians, actors, political leaders and fans around the world.

Dolly Parton's death marks the end of an extraordinary chapter in American popular culture. Her music, films, business ventures and charitable work have influenced generations, ensuring that her legacy will continue long after her final performance.
