News Desk: Tabata, a high-intensity workout known for delivering an intense burst of exercise in a short time, has become a talking point after filmmaker Karan Johar and actor Vijay Deverakonda shared their experiences on Koffee With Karan Season 9. While Karan described his experience as almost unbearable, Vijay admitted that the workout makes him angry with his trainer.
The conversation took place during an episode featuring Vijay Deverakonda and Rashmika Mandanna, who spoke about their fitness routines and personal lives. Karan brought up the subject after mentioning that Shahid Kapoor and Kriti Sanon had described Rashmika as someone who is extremely dedicated to working out.
Rashmika said that fitness and spending time with her family were among the things she enjoyed most. When she is in Hyderabad, she reportedly spends around one to one-and-a-half hours exercising and devotes the rest of her time to her family. During shoots away from home, her routine mainly revolves around work and the gym.
Vijay, however, said that his approach to fitness was different. He enjoys working out to achieve specific goals, while he described Rashmika as someone who treats exercise as an essential part of life.
Karan Johar’s Hilarious Experience With Tabata
The conversation took a humorous turn when Karan recalled trying different forms of exercise. While talking about Tabata, he mistakenly referred to it as “Tamatar”, leaving his guests laughing.
After Vijay corrected him, Karan described his experience of attempting the workout on his trainer’s recommendation.
“On the fourth minute, I thought, this is what a cardiac arrest feels like. I thought I was going to die. How can you do this to a human? It's assault,” he said.
Vijay also shared his dislike for the workout, saying, “Tabata makes me angry.” He added that he often gets frustrated with his trainer while doing it.
Karan also spoke about an embarrassing experience with Pilates, while Rashmika revealed that she had been trying to persuade Vijay to try the exercise with her.
What Exactly Is a Tabata Workout?
Tabata is a form of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) that alternates short bursts of intense exercise with brief recovery periods.
The traditional Tabata protocol involves 20 seconds of high-intensity exercise followed by 10 seconds of rest, repeated eight times. This produces a four-minute workout cycle.
Exercises commonly used in Tabata sessions include:
* Burpees and squat jumps
* Sprinting and stationary cycling
* High knees and mountain climbers
* Push-ups and kettlebell swings
The method is named after Japanese researcher Dr Izumi Tabata, whose 1996 research examined the effects of high-intensity interval training on fitness.
Is Tabata Suitable for Everyone?
Tabata can help improve cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance when performed appropriately. However, its demanding pace may not be suitable for everyone, particularly beginners or people with certain medical conditions.
Fitness experts generally recommend starting at a manageable intensity, learning the correct technique and increasing the workload gradually. People with underlying health concerns should consult a qualified healthcare professional before attempting strenuous exercise.
Karan and Vijay’s candid reactions have brought a lighter side to the conversation around celebrity fitness routines, while also highlighting just how challenging high-intensity workouts can feel.
