News Desk: A 45-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly killing his two sisters with an axe during a ritual that he believed would cure his illnesses in Jharkhand's East Singhbhum district, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place in Babaida village under the Dhalbhumgarh police station area. According to police, the accused allegedly killed his sisters, aged 55 and 50, before locking his house and walking around 15 kilometres to a police station, where he surrendered.
Police said the man believed that a ritual involving sorcery and a special puja would help him recover from his health problems. The case has raised concerns about the dangers of superstition and the consequences of relying on unverified methods to treat illnesses.
According to the husband of one of the victims, the accused had called both women to his house on Sunday, telling them that a special puja would be performed to cure him. The sisters reportedly visited him to take care of him and help him recover.
The accused's third sister said that she had also been invited to attend the ritual but decided not to go. She expressed relief at having avoided the incident, saying that her two sisters had gone to their brother's house to support him.
Police station in-charge Dhiraj Kumar Mishra confirmed that the accused had been arrested and allegedly admitted to killing his sisters. According to the officer, the preliminary investigation indicated that superstition may have played a role in the crime.
Police also recovered an axe believed to have been used in the killings from the scene. Several medicines were reportedly found inside the accused's house, suggesting that he had been receiving treatment for various illnesses. Investigators said he had also been consulting a local practitioner associated with sorcery.
The exact nature of the accused's medical condition has not been disclosed. Police are investigating the circumstances leading to the killings and the events surrounding the alleged ritual.
The incident has once again highlighted the serious risks associated with superstition and the use of potentially harmful practices in the name of healing. While the investigation continues, police are gathering evidence to establish the sequence of events and determine the full circumstances of the double murder.
The accused remains under arrest as authorities proceed with the case.
