News Desk: Elon Musk donated $480,350 to Flint Community Schools in Michigan in 2018 to install water filtration systems after years of concerns over contaminated drinking water. However, technical problems, testing delays and the COVID-19 pandemic meant students had to wait until February 2022 before the new filtered drinking fountains were unveiled.
The donation from Musk and the Musk Foundation was announced on October 5, 2018, following an offer of assistance by the billionaire on social media earlier that year. The money was intended to fund ultraviolet water filtration systems designed to remove lead and bacteria from school drinking fountains.
The initiative came amid the continuing impact of the Flint water crisis, which began after the city switched its drinking water source to the Flint River in April 2014. The city returned to the Detroit water system in October 2015.
Flint water crisis raised serious health concerns
A 2016 study published in the American Journal of Public Health found that the proportion of children under five with elevated blood lead levels increased from 2.4 per cent in 2013 to 4.9 per cent in 2015.
Researchers linked the increase to the water-source switch and the corrosive nature of the river water, which contributed to lead entering the drinking supply through ageing infrastructure. The study also found that the impact was particularly pronounced in poorer neighbourhoods.
Lead exposure is especially dangerous for children because it can cause lasting harm to brain development and overall health. The World Health Organization states that no safe level of lead exposure has been identified.
Following the crisis, Flint schools relied on bottled water while efforts continued to establish a reliable filtration system.
Technical problems delayed the installation
Although the filtration systems were initially expected to be ready by January 2019, the original filters proved inconsistent and were never certified. The school district also struggled to contact the manufacturer to resolve the problems.
Engineers from Kettering University subsequently began looking for a suitable replacement. The process required additional testing, which was further delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when access to schools and laboratories became restricted.
University engineering professor Laura Sullivan explained that filtration remained important because some school buildings still had lead-containing plumbing.
Filtered fountains opened in 2022
On February 8, 2022, Flint Community Schools held a ceremony at Southwestern Classical Academy to unveil the new filtered water fountains. Superintendent Kevelin Jones was the first to drink from one of the fountains.
According to local reporting, tests showed no detectable lead in water leaving the new fountains. However, samples also revealed considerable variation in lead levels in water entering the systems across different school buildings.
Musk’s donation formed one part of Flint’s longer recovery effort and did not erase the harm caused by the crisis. The episode also highlighted the importance of reliable testing, ageing infrastructure repairs and public confidence in drinking water safety.
