Divya Mittal Enters Uttar Pradesh Politics

News Desk: Former IAS officer Divya Mittal has announced the launch of her political party, Jan-niti Bharat Party, and said it will contest the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections. The 2013-batch officer made the announcement in a video message shared on social media, outlining her vision of people-centric governance, equality in decision-making and public accountability.

Mittal said her party would focus on placing people at the centre of policymaking and ensuring that government decisions address citizens' needs. She announced three key principles that will guide the proposed political organisation.

The first principle focuses on public participation in policymaking. Explaining the idea, Mittal said people should have a voice in shaping policies that affect their lives. The party's motto for this principle is “Jan se niti, Niti se Bharat”, which translates to policy by the people and policies that build the nation.

The second principle aims to ensure that decisions are based on people's needs rather than their identities. Its motto is “Zarurat se faisla, faisle mein barabari”, emphasising decisions based on need and equality in decision-making.

The third principle focuses on accountability. Mittal said the public should be able to question the actions of those in power and demand answers about their work. The principle is reflected in the motto “Janata ko hisaab; Hisaab se sudhaar”, which emphasises accountability to the people and improvement through responsibility.

Divya Mittal's political journey

Mittal had indicated her intention to enter politics last month, saying she wanted to work directly with people rather than join an established political party. She described Uttar Pradesh as her “karmabhoomi” and said she wanted to address people's problems while involving them in the process.

She has also shared phone and WhatsApp contact details, inviting people who identify with her vision to connect with the initiative.

Her announcement comes after she resigned from the Indian Administrative Service on August 30. The Uttar Pradesh government accepted her resignation on September 15, ending her 13-year career in the civil services.

From civil services to politics

Originally from Rewari in Haryana, Mittal studied at IIT Delhi and IIM Bangalore before working in London. She later returned to India to prepare for the UPSC Civil Services Examination, which she cleared in 2013 on her second attempt, securing the 68th rank.

During her administrative career, she served as district magistrate in Sant Kabir Nagar, Mirzapur and Deoria, besides holding senior positions in the Uttar Pradesh government.

She gained wider recognition during her tenure in Mirzapur, where her administration helped provide piped drinking water to Lahuria Dah, a remote village whose residents had depended on water tankers for years.

With the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, the launch of Jan-niti Bharat Party marks Mittal's formal entry into electoral politics. She has confirmed the party's intention to contest the polls, but has not yet announced the constituency from which she may stand.
