News Desk: A financial content creator with more than 1.4 million social media followers was found dead at his residence in Kanathur, near Chennai, on Tuesday night. Police suspect suicide, while the circumstances surrounding his death have drawn attention to allegations of online harassment and a complaint involving the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI).
The influencer, identified in media reports as Harish, had built a significant following over the past five years by sharing financial information and investment-related videos in Tamil. His content covered topics including mutual funds, stock trading and other financial instruments, attracting a large audience on Instagram and YouTube.
According to police, his body was recovered from his residence and sent to a government hospital for an autopsy. As of Wednesday, a case was yet to be registered in connection with the death.
In one of his last videos, the influencer reportedly said he was distressed after a complaint was filed against him with SEBI. He also alleged that he had faced cyberbullying and threats directed at his family. He claimed that people unhappy with his growth were attempting to get his videos removed and were causing him mental distress.
The controversy has raised questions about the regulatory requirements governing financial advice shared on social media. SEBI has rules for individuals who provide regulated investment advisory services, including registration requirements for registered investment advisers. The nature of the services offered and the specific regulatory obligations depend on the activities involved.
The influencer had also received recognition for his work, including a 2025 award for Best Finance Channel from a private organisation based in Chennai.
Following news of his death, several social media users and fellow creators expressed their condolences. Some online discussions linked the incident to allegations involving another YouTuber, Jason Samuel, associated with Zemuria Inc.
Samuel, however, denied cyberbullying the influencer. In a statement posted on social media, he said he was shocked and deeply saddened by the death. He maintained that his criticism concerned the influencer’s alleged lack of appropriate SEBI registration and claims about his professional credentials, including his association with the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI).
Samuel said he had encouraged the creator to obtain the necessary authorisation before continuing his work and denied intending to cause harm. These allegations and counterclaims have not been established as the cause of the death.
The incident has renewed discussion about the pressures faced by online creators, the consequences of public disputes and the importance of responsible communication on digital platforms.
Police have yet to announce further findings. The circumstances of the death and the allegations made by the individuals involved remain subject to investigation and verification.
