India celebrates National Sports Day every year on August 29 to honour Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest hockey players in the country's history. The day marks his birth anniversary and also highlights the importance of sports, fitness, discipline and teamwork in everyday life.
Major Dhyan Chand was born on August 29, 1905, in Allahabad, now known as Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh. He earned the nickname “The Hockey Wizard” because of his exceptional control, goal-scoring ability and remarkable understanding of the game. His career helped establish India as a dominant force in international hockey during the early decades of the 20th century.
Dhyan Chand was part of the Indian hockey teams that won three consecutive Olympic gold medals — at Amsterdam in 1928, Los Angeles in 1932 and Berlin in 1936. He captained the Indian side at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where India defeated Germany 8-1 in the final. His achievements became an important part of India's sporting history.
The government chose his birthday as National Sports Day to commemorate his contribution to Indian hockey and inspire future generations to take up sports. The observance was formally established in 2012 and has since become an annual occasion for promoting sporting participation and physical fitness across the country.
National Sports Day is not limited to remembering one athlete. Schools, colleges, sports organisations and government institutions use the occasion to organise competitions, fitness activities, awareness programmes and other sporting events. The broader message is that sports can help develop discipline, confidence, teamwork and a healthy lifestyle.
The day is also closely linked with India's National Sports Awards. The country's highest sporting honour, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna Award, carries the hockey legend's name. The award was earlier known as the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna before being renamed in 2021.
Another important milestone came on August 29, 2019, when the Fit India Movement was launched on National Sports Day. The initiative aimed to encourage people to make physical activity and fitness part of their daily lives.
There is also a common misconception that hockey is India's official national sport. However, the government has clarified that no sport has been officially designated as India's national game. Hockey's historic success, particularly during Dhyan Chand's era, is the reason it is often popularly described that way.
National Sports Day 2026 therefore carries a message that goes beyond medals and records. It celebrates Dhyan Chand's extraordinary legacy while encouraging people, especially young Indians, to participate in sports and embrace a more active and healthy lifestyle.
