Three people were killed and three others critically injured after a car carrying six occupants crashed into a transformer in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district early Monday, police said.
The accident took place around 2:30 am near Oel town, around 8 km from the district headquarters. According to police, the group was travelling towards Sitapur when the car went out of control, crossed the footpath, entered a field and slammed into a transformer.
The impact caused electrical wires to break and fall onto the vehicle, triggering sparks and a fire. All six occupants were trapped inside as the car quickly caught fire. Local residents said the collision was so intense that it sounded like an explosion.
Authorities managed to bring the fire under control, but a large part of the vehicle had already been gutted. Ayush Kumar, a resident of Shiv Colony, died at the spot. Police said his body was found trapped in the driver’s seat.
The other five occupants suffered severe burn injuries but managed to escape from the burning vehicle. They were found struggling by the roadside before help arrived.
All five injured men were rushed to a hospital for treatment. However, two of them later died from their injuries. One of the deceased was identified as Akash Verma, a resident of Pipariya Bypass. Police are working to establish the identity of the third victim.
The three survivors were identified as Piyush Singh, Aman Verma and another occupant whose identity has not yet been conclusively established.
Police said the exact circumstances that led to the car losing control would be determined through an investigation. The three bodies have been sent for post-mortem examinations, and further legal proceedings are underway.
In a post on X, Lakhimpur Kheri Police said personnel immediately reached the accident site after receiving information. The injured were shifted to hospital, while the bodies were sent for post-mortem.
The incident has raised concerns over the dangers posed by roadside electrical infrastructure, although officials have not yet established whether the transformer or any other factor contributed to the accident. Authorities said the investigation would determine the exact cause.
