The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has approached President Droupadi Murmu and West Bengal Governor RN Ravi, seeking appointments with party delegations over what it described as “utter lawlessness” and the alleged misuse of police in the state.
The move comes after the office of TMC national general secretary and MP Abhishek Banerjee on Kolkata’s Camac Street was allegedly ransacked and looted by unidentified men early Thursday.
Banerjee shared CCTV footage on social media that purportedly showed masked individuals entering the office and vandalising the premises. According to the footage shared by him, the men were seen leaving with electronic equipment, including a television and other gadgets.
The office is located on the seventh floor of a multi-storey building on Camac Street. Banerjee alleged that the incident was carried out by the BJP and questioned whether the state governor, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the Prime Minister’s Office would take action.
He also urged the judiciary, particularly the Calcutta High Court, to take note of what he described as a pattern of violence, vandalism and intimidation in West Bengal.
Banerjee directly targeted West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, accusing his government of using intimidation against the Opposition. He questioned why the chief minister was allegedly “so scared” of the TMC and him.
The TMC MP further argued that if Opposition parties were to be treated through violence and intimidation, the chief minister would have no moral authority to continue in office. He called for Adhikari’s resignation.
Police have detained six people for questioning in connection with the alleged break-in and vandalism. An investigation is underway to establish what happened and identify those responsible.
TMC IT Cell in-charge Upashna Chaudhary also alleged that individuals linked to the BJP were behind the attack. She claimed the men arrived at around 3:30 am, assaulted security guards and forcibly entered the office before vandalising it.
Chaudhary said the condition of the office after the incident was “far from good”.
The allegations have intensified the political confrontation between the ruling BJP and the TMC in West Bengal. While the TMC has demanded action and raised concerns about law and order, the police investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and the identities of those involved.
Further developments are awaited as police continue their probe.
